A Star-studded multi-media public awareness campaign intended to help raise public consciousness around the alarming educational gap of underrepresented students and increase the number of students that register for the PSAT, SAT and/or ACT exams in 2012.
On April 28th, 2012, SuperSATurday College Rally and Resource Fair was held in Downtown Oakland at Laney College. SuperSATurday is a multi-media outreach campaign targeting first-generation college bound students and families in the Bay Area. The program's purpose is to inform students and the community of the importance of college entrance exams and provide them with preparation resources, strategies, and workshops. The program provides direct outreach and information assemblies at local high schools and community events, a one-day motivational event for families, informational workshops, test preparation courses, and sponsorship of student test fees.
In alignment with the College Board, Mitchell Kapor Foundation and RT Fisher Educational Enterprises, Choose College focuses on increasing the college participation of students underrepresented in college. These populations are predominantly served by schools that are under-funded, inadequately staffed and lack the resources to provide the same quality education as suburban environments. In addition, satisfactory performance on college entrance exams is a major requirement for college admission.
There are major racial disparities in students successfully performing on college entrance exams resulting in large groups of students being removed from being able to attend many four-year colleges, especially high-ranking institutions. As noted by Journal of Blacks on Higher Education, “Under the SAT scoring system, most non-minority students hoping to qualify for admission to any of the nation’s 25 highest-ranked universities need to score at least 700 on each portion of the SAT… in this top-scoring category of all SAT test takers, blacks made up only 1 percent.
On April 28th, 2012, SuperSATurday was targeted to serve over 800 participants to include the one-day motivational conference, pre and post event activities, informational workshops, test preparation courses and support with test fees and resources. The first SuperSATurday College Rally and Resource Fair was held in May 2011 with over 400 high school students and parents in attendance. The campaign featured mass media public outreach efforts that reached over 20,000 people throughout the Bay Area and included informational workshops in high schools, churches, and community events.
Based on the success of last year’s program, the City of Oakland developed a city proclamation in honor of SuperSATurday. In addition, the program received accolades and honorable mentions from the city of Hayward, school district officials, and media outlets including KMEL Radio and the Oakland Post.
